The pier spanning from the Nature Center into the channel between Hunting Island and Fripp Island is mainly for fishing which is quite popular (friendsofhuntingisland.org/fishing). For hikers, the pier offers a great view on the southern entrance of the saltwater lagoon and Little Hunting Island. After the 2016 visit from Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc on the Nature Center Pier, it took 4 1/2 years to extensively rehabiliate the pier - the refurbished version reopened on September 18, 2021.

    Hunting Island Loop

The Hunting Island Loop offers a captivating journey through South Carolina's coastal wilderness, blending dense maritime forests with expansive saltwater marshes and pristine sandy beaches. You'll find yourself walking under canopies of live oaks draped in Spanish moss, then stepping out onto the Lagoon Trail for sweeping views of the ocean. The Marsh Boardwalk Trail is a particular highlight, providing an intimate look at the salt marsh ecosystem and often delivering magnificent sunset views.

This moderate 9.2-mile (14.8 km) hike, with a gentle 41 feet (13 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 3 hours and 43 minutes. As Hunting Island State Park is very popular, plan to arrive early to secure parking and avoid the busiest times. An entrance fee is typically required to access the park, which is well worth it for the diverse scenery and abundant wildlife you'll encounter.

What makes this loop truly special is its unique combination of ecosystems, showcasing a barrier island's dynamic environment. Beyond the trails, you can climb the historic lighthouse for panoramic vistas or even take a refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean directly from the beach access points. Wildlife sightings, from deer and alligators to various bird species like herons and pelicans, are common, adding to the immersive natural experience.
