The name Oktogon refers to the octagonal design of the square through the early 1870s built according to plans by Antal Szkalnitzky building. In 1936 he was renamed Mussolini tér ("Mussolini Square") and 1945 in November 7th tér ("Square of 7 November"), before he got back in 1990 his original name.
Since its construction in the course of the city expansion at the end of the 19th century, the square is one of the major traffic junctions between Westbahnhof and the Pester City. Today, it presents itself as the location of many (fast food) restaurant chains.
