The hike to Punta Tre Chiosis in Valle Varaita offers expansive views of the Cottian Alps, including the prominent Monviso mountain group. This difficult route covers 11.6 miles (18.6 km) with a significant elevation gain of 4421 feet (1347 metres), typically taking around 8 hours and 6 minutes to complete. You will traverse a mix of dirt roads and well-marked paths, with the final ascent to the summit becoming quite steep. From the broad, rounded detrital ridge at the top, marked by a metal cross, you can enjoy a wide panorama. In mid-July, the trail is also known for its rich alpine flora, featuring beautiful high-altitude flowers.
Planning your visit requires considering your starting point. The full ascent from Pontechianale or Genzana hamlet is the more demanding option, requiring good physical fitness. Alternatively, you can significantly reduce the effort by taking the chairlift from Pontechianale to Rifugio Helios. This shortens the hike to about 4 hours and makes it a medium-challenging activity. Regardless of your starting point, remember to wear layered clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and carry plenty of water and a packed lunch.
Punta Tre Chiosis is notable as one of the more accessible 3000-meter peaks in the region, especially with the chairlift option. Its name, “Tre Chiosis,” refers to the three valleys—Chiosis, Tiuri, and Savarech—that the mountain encloses to the east. The trail provides a superb balcony over the surrounding mountains, offering detailed views of the western slopes of the Monviso group. You can also admire the Lake of Pontechianale during the chairlift ascent, adding to the scenic appeal of this high-altitude experience.
