Already in the first century AD, there was a ford at the level of today's Artlenburg to the other bank of the Elbe, which was used by the Romans and subsequent tribes of tribes as safe river crossing at low tide. Tomb and coin finds from different epochs clearly show that there was already very early a populated spot, which had developed around this natural transition over the then main branch of the Elbe.
