The Malakoff estate is a bit unusual. The Malakoff Tower was built in 1855 by a baron named Paul Claes, known as the "zotte baron", and has never had any other use than to satisfy a whim of this arrogant and eccentric nobleman.

Hiking

The Malakoff Tower is a copy of a medieval tower erected in 1854 by the then owner of the estate. It would take its name from the Battle of Malakoff, during the Crimean War, during which the allies, English and French, won against the Russians. Battle that the owner of the place would have played in the field during a party. Hence the name of the tower.

The hilly landscape between Lembeek village and Lembeekbos was molded by castle owner and gin distiller Paul Claes. The castle is no longer there, but the Malakoff Tower stands out on the other side of the hill. This replica medieval watchtower (1854) is located in a beautiful nature reserve with old Zennemeander, ponds, swamp zones and flowery grasslands. The Malakoff domain was voted the most beautiful spot in Halle.
