Embark on the Achenbach and Cuates Canyon Loop for an easy hike through the Chihuahuan Desert. This 3.7-mile (6.0 km) route takes you through sandy washes, rocky sections, and narrow canyon passages, offering a true desert experience. You will gain 708 feet (216 metres) in elevation, but the path is generally manageable for most hikers. Look out for the Peña Blanca Rock Shelters along the way, a unique feature nestled among the yuccas and cacti. The entire loop should take you about 1 hour and 50 minutes to complete, providing ample time to soak in the views of the Las Cruces valley and surrounding cliffs.

When planning your visit, remember that while the Achenbach and Cuates Canyon Loop is rated easy, it does require some desert trekking experience. You should be ready for occasional route-finding, particularly within Cuates Canyon where the path might not always be clear. Wearing long pants is advisable to protect your legs from encroaching desert plants. Always carry enough water and check weather conditions before you head out, as desert temperatures can change quickly.

This loop is a prime example of the diverse ecosystems found within the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument. As you hike, you will encounter a classic Chihuahuan Desert environment, rich with ocotillo and sotol, showcasing the unique flora of the region. The trail offers a chance to connect with the natural landscape and appreciate the rugged beauty that defines this part of New Mexico. It is a great option if you are looking for a relatively short desert adventure with varied scenery.
