Personal recommendation: off-season when the cables are down go up. So you don't need permission. The fact that the cables are down makes things a bit more difficult, but not much. Is doable. Were there in early April. You just have to make sure the weather isn't snowy. Otherwise the rock is very smooth. Just look at the webcam.

    1,430m

Embark on the Half Dome Trail, a difficult hiking route that challenges you with its dramatic terrain and rewarding vistas. This journey covers 14.6 miles (23.4 km) and demands a significant 4691 feet (1430 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 9 hours and 56 minutes to complete. As you ascend, you will pass by the impressive Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall, feeling the refreshing mist on your face. The scenery continuously evolves, revealing expansive views of Liberty Cap, the iconic Yosemite Valley, and the distant peaks of the High Sierra. Your efforts culminate in unparalleled panoramic vistas from the Half Dome Summit, a truly memorable experience.

Planning your hike on this route requires careful consideration, as it is an extremely difficult undertaking not suitable for beginners. You must secure a permit to hike Half Dome, especially for the iconic cable section. These cables are typically installed from late May or early June through mid-October, so plan your visit accordingly. Always check weather forecasts before you go, and avoid the cables during thunderstorms due to the serious risk of lightning.

Half Dome stands as a geological marvel, a granite monolith carved by glacial activity over millions of years. Its distinctive shape makes it one of Yosemite National Park's most recognizable landmarks and a symbol of the park itself. The trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the park's diverse ecosystems, from the lush valley floor to the exposed high-alpine environment. This challenging ascent provides a deep connection to the raw power and beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
