The Alte Oper was heavily damaged during World War II. The city council wanted to demolish the remains (partly there were also plans to blow them up). In the 1950s, a citizens' initiative was founded for the reconstruction of the Alte Oper. The reopening took place in the presence of the then Federal President Carstensen on 28.08.1981.

The construction costs of the Frankfurt Opera were planned at two million marks at the time. By the time it was completed in 1880, it had cost a whole 20 million marks. In 1944, it was largely destroyed in a bombing raid, and in 1951, a new opera house was built. In 1965, they wanted to tear down the ruin completely, but thanks to citizen protests and Germany's largest fundraising campaign to date, it was rebuilt true to the original by 1981.
