Fort Vuren is part of the New Dutch Waterline, a defense line from 1845. This line runs from Muiden to the Biesbosch and contains more than 60 forts.

Fort Vuren, part of the New Dutch Waterline, was constructed between 1815 and 1870. The fort originally served to extend the water line to the east, so that Utrecht would also fall within the defense line. The oldest part of the fort, the tower, dates from 1848.
During the Second World War, the water line lost its effectiveness because aircraft could fly over it. After the wars, the fort served as a detention center for 500 detainees. Nowadays it is even possible to spend the night there.
