Smartass knowledge: It's a pitch oven, not a tar oven. Tar is produced by pyrolysis of coal, while pitch is the name given to viscous to solid, tar-like to bituminous, fusible residues that remain after the distillation of organic matter or of coal or lignite tar. Tar has an oily consistency and remains semi-liquid or viscous, whereas pitch only retains its viscous properties at high heat and hardens when it cools. Pitch was originally obtained from resinous woods by carbonization.
