The Mariental in Eisenach is an important connection between the city and the surrounding hiking trails. It connects the south of Eisenach with the Drachenschlucht. It begins on the outskirts of the city in the area of the Wartburg and is adorned here with magnificent villas. The artificially created Prinzenteich, which originated from a former swamp area and is now a popular destination for walks, is well-known in this area. The Mariental also houses the golden "M", a monument to Duchess Maria Pawlowna. Numerous hiking trails lead through the valley to the Ludwigsklamm, the Landgrafenschlucht, and the Elfengrotte. The Elisabethpfad 2 from Eisenach to Marburg is 193 km long; the Way of St. James is 178 km due to occasionally deviating routes. The Pilgrim Guide 2: Eisenach Marburg describes the Elisabethpfad from Eisenach to Marburg. At the same time, this pilgrim route closes a gap in the network of the Way of St. James. As a Way of St. James, it offers route variations in some places that are closer to the historically assumed routes of the St. James pilgrims. These are marked with the scallop shell. The Elisabethpfad, on the other hand, is marked with the Elisabethpfad logo. In the forest, the marking is then always reduced to painted yellow arrows. https://www.elisabethpfad.de/aktuell/detail/pilgerfuehrer-2-eisenach-marburg-985

As the only one of the former five city gates, the Romanesque Nikolaitor has been preserved. At the exit of Karlsplatz towards Bahnhofstraße, directly next to the Nikolaikirche, one left the city through this gate in an easterly direction. Until 1832, the city gates were closed every evening. After that, the wall structure increasingly fell victim to increasing traffic. The Nikolaitor dates from around 1170. The composer Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685, in Eisenach. The Bach Monument at the Bachhaus in Eisenach was created in 1884, designed by the sculptor Adolf von Donndorf and manufactured by Hermann Heinrich Howaldt. At the time, it was erected on the market square, in front of the north side of the Georgenkirche, and around 1938 it then received its place in front of the Bachhaus on Frauenplan. The Eisenach Bachhaus was opened in 1907 by the Neue Bachgesellschaft as the first Bach Museum.
