The Nikolaitor is one of 5 former city gates. It is the only thing that is left. It was built around 1170 and is located on the former Via Regia trade route from Frankfurt am Main to Krakow.

Hiking

As the only one of the former five city gates, the Romanesque Nikolaitor has been preserved. At the exit of Karlsplatz towards Bahnhofstraße, directly next to the Nikolaikirche, one left the city through this gate in an easterly direction. Until 1832, the city gates were closed every evening. After that, the wall structure increasingly fell victim to increasing traffic. The Nikolaitor dates from around 1170.
