On May 15, 1895, the Eifelquerbahn (Eifel Cross Railway) opened, running 23.51 kilometers from Monreal station to Andernach in the east and 70.69 kilometers to Gerolstein in the west. The line was operated as a single track from Mayen Ost to Gerolstein. The latter line was built by the Royal Prussian State Railways (K.P.St. E.). Passenger service was discontinued on January 13, 1991. It was revived by the DBAG on August 6, 2000.
