Brunssummerheide Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Brunssummerheide lies on the border between Germany and the Netherlands between the towns of Brunssum, Heerlen and Landgraf near Kerkrade. The Brunssummerheide is a 580 hectare heathland with shrub heaths, small raised moor-like vegetation units, pine forests, marsh forests, lakes and open sandy areas. In the middle of the Brunssummerheide rises a stream called "Rode Beek" in Dutch and "Roter Bach" in German. The stream got its name because it carries iron-rich, acidic water. The iron oxidizes in an acidic environment and turns red. A small, raised moor-like vegetation has grown in the source area of this stream. A little further downstream there is a small area for "foot bathing". You can't really swim here because the water is far too shallow. Children can splash around in the water, however. Some dog owners also let their dogs swim here. Children and dogs therefore have to share the small amount of water. From this beach you can see the peat moss-rich vegetation. From here you also have a beautiful view of a field of bog lilies (Narthecium ossifragum), which can be found between the peat mosses and moor grass (Molinia caerulescens).

The Teveren Heath covers an area of approximately 4.5 km² west of the town of Teveren in the southern district of Heinsberg along the German-Dutch border and, together with the nearby nature reserves of Rodebach and Brunssummerheide, forms the Heath Nature Park. On the German side, the towns of Geilenkirchen and Übach-Palenberg as well as the municipality of Gangelt border the area, which has been part of the Green Metropolis project since 2008. On the Dutch side lies the town of Brunssum. To the north of the heath is the NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, the home airfield of the NATO E-3A unit with its AWACS early warning system.

Small jetty over a small pond. On one side of the river there is very white sand on a small hill. When the sun is shining, an ideal picnic spot that almost gives off a bit of a sea vibe.

A visit to this lake with the surrounding forest is recommended by bike as well as for a hike. Large parking spaces make it possible to start the excursion from there.

The Teverner Heide has a special vegetation because of the sandy soil. A visit is recommended at different times of the year. However, there are only a few paths that are easy to navigate by bike.
