The beach cafe is no longer here, but the promenade gives breathtaking views across the harbour, and can offer a place to sit and take in an amazing sunset.

Currently renovating and reopening sometime in 2024. There is a sign on site. It's a shame, I remembered it from previous years as a nice place for tea and cake.

Funded by donations, a small path by the sea was built here. There are beautiful views as well as numerous benches, steps to viewpoints and everything is very well maintained. Nevertheless, a bit of “life” is still missing; it seems sterile. Maybe there's something else to come? Still, a big thumbs up for the beautification of Combe Martin.

What did we do wrong???? We didn't have anywhere near the dream views shown here. Either there were houses in front of it, trees or bushes (see my pictures). Either we missed something or there are entrances that we didn't find. I can only guess that the pictures that show a dream view here were taken while descending to the first beach. We always stayed at the top of the Coastal Path, maybe that was the problem?

We didn't find the beach very nice today - it was rocky, a bit unkempt, and there were lots of dogs. But there were lots of restaurants around it! Maybe we were just unlucky? It didn't look anything like the photos we posted. The fact that the A-road runs right past it doesn't make it any better.

This small sandy and rocky beach is flanked by the highest cliffs in England. There is a large parking area right above the beach, as well as a public toilet.

Yes, Berrynarbor is an excellent starting point for circular hikes. These routes often blend coastal scenery with quiet inland paths through fields and woodlands. For a moderate loop that showcases this variety, consider the walk from Berrynarbor to Hele Bay, which is about 6.9 miles (11.1 km).
While many coastal paths can be steep, there are easier options suitable for families. Look for shorter, less strenuous routes that avoid the most rugged cliff sections. The View of the North Devon Coast – Combe Martin Beach loop from Berrynarbor is a good example, offering rewarding views over a manageable 3.7 miles (5.9 km).
Dogs are welcome on most trails, but be aware that you will cross fields with livestock and walk along exposed cliff edges. It's essential to keep your dog under control, and on a lead where required. The varied terrain of coastal paths and inland fields provides great exercise for energetic dogs.
The area is famous for its dramatic coastal scenery. For some of the most impressive views, the challenging hike to Great Hangman is a local favourite, as it includes England's highest sea cliff. The Combe Martin & Great Hangman loop is a 5.3-mile (8.6 km) route that takes you to these spectacular viewpoints.
Absolutely. You don't need to tackle the biggest climbs to enjoy the coastline. The walk to Little Hangman offers a less strenuous alternative with fantastic views over Combe Martin Bay. The Combe Martin loop via Little Hangman is a moderate 4.7-mile (7.6 km) trail that is a great option.
Expect a lot of variety. The South West Coast Path sections involve steep, zig-zagging paths on rugged cliffs, which can be challenging. Inland, you'll find gentler rambles through meadows and ancient woodlands. Proper walking shoes are essential, as paths can be uneven, gravelly, or muddy, especially after rain.
Bus services, such as the 301 route, connect Berrynarbor with nearby villages like Combe Martin and Hele Bay. This makes it possible to do linear walks along the coast path and take the bus back. Always check the latest bus timetables before you set out, as service frequency can vary.
Parking in Berrynarbor village can be limited. For many of the popular coastal routes, it's often easier to park in the larger public car parks in Combe Martin or Ilfracombe and start your hike from there. These locations provide direct access to the South West Coast Path.
Yes, many walks can be planned to include a stop at a pub or café. The villages of Berrynarbor, Combe Martin, and Hele Bay all have traditional pubs and tearooms. It's a good idea to check their opening times, especially outside of the main tourist season.
The trails are highly regarded by the komoot community, with over 2,700 hikers exploring the area. Reviewers frequently praise the stunning sea views, the dramatic cliff formations, and the pleasant contrast between the coastal paths and the peaceful inland countryside.
Spring and early summer are fantastic times for hiking if you enjoy seeing wildflowers. The coastal paths and hedgerows come alive with colour from flowers like bluebells, thrift, and sea campion, adding to the beauty of the landscape.
For a change of pace from the demanding coastal cliffs, you can find peaceful walks along the River Umber. These routes wind through scenic valleys and offer a more sheltered and tranquil hiking experience compared to the exposed coastline.
