Somewhat hidden in the historic center of the municipality of Untersiemau is the idyllic moated castle that characterizes the town to this day. The moated castle, also known as the lower castle, was probably built by knight Thiemo de Suemen at the beginning of the 13th century. In the centuries that followed, the castle changed hands several times, including Duke Ernst I of Coburg. The destruction of the Thirty Years' War was taken as an opportunity to renovate and expand the palace complex. After the death of the last lord of Untersiemau, the castle was in danger of falling into ruin. Although the castle was built 700 years earlier, its present appearance was not created until the 20th century. Bodo Ebhard, the restorer of Veste Coburg, was responsible for giving the moated castle a completely new facade in the style of historicism. The castle is privately owned and can therefore only be viewed from the outside.
