The culinary ensemble in the park's entrance area is essentially based on a single, historically developed complex of buildings: the former electoral economic building. The historic complex was designed starting in 1781 by the famous French court architect Emanuel Joseph von Herigoyen, who designed almost all the striking buildings in the park on behalf of the Mainz Elector-Archbishop Friedrich Carl von Erthal. The elongated, classicist main building, which today houses the elegant bistro and restaurant, was originally built between 1781 and 1783 as the central kitchen building and economy yard for the nearby garden palace. At that time, it served to supply the noble society during their summer stays in the park. What is special about this place is its unbroken tradition: Since the late 18th century – practically since its completion – this economic building has continuously housed a public restaurant with an attached beer garden. It is therefore considered one of the oldest excursion restaurants in the entire region. The layout, which you perceive today as two separate areas, resulted from later structural additions and the functional separation of the catering. The main building with its striking, bright facade opens onto the sunny restaurant terrace and radiates the noble elegance of early classicism. Directly behind it and offset to the side, the former operational and outbuilding nestles, which in its current form was extensively modernized and expanded in the 1950s and 1960s to meet the demands of modern excursion traffic. From these rear utility rooms and serving windows, the spacious, shady self-service beer garden under the old chestnut trees is operated. Together, the buildings form a listed ensemble that bridges the gap between the courtly splendor of the 18th century and modern, relaxed Franconian-Bavarian beer garden culture.
