The Scheufelen paper factory in Oberlenningen experienced several golden ages in its history. The factory's history dates back to 1855, when Carl Scheufelen founded a small hand paper mill in Esslingen. The company grew rapidly and moved to the new factory in Oberlenningen in 1885, which is now considered a lost place. In the 1920s and 30s, the paper factory experienced its first heyday. The demand for paper steadily increased, and Scheufelen made a name for itself in the industry through innovation and quality. In the 1950s and 60s, Scheufelen focused on expansion and acquired several competitors. However, in the 1970s, the paper industry came under increasing pressure. The oil crisis led to rising raw material costs, and the demand for paper products stagnated. Scheufelen responded to these challenges by diversifying its product portfolio and expanding its export business. In the 1990s, Scheufelen was able to build on past successes again. The company focused on environmentally friendly production and was one of the first paper factories in Germany to receive the FSC certificate. In addition, Scheufelen scored points with innovative products and high-quality papers. In March 2018, the Scheufelen paper factory in Oberlenningen filed for insolvency and ceased operations. The insolvency came as a surprise, as Scheufelen had previously been regarded as a company with a long history and a strong focus on quality and sustainability.
