We went to this hut on a bikepacking tour with a gravel bike, but it's not really recommended because you have to cross some streams and swamps and mostly had to push or carry the bike. However, it is a highly recommended hut for hiking.

Always open! A small hut with benches, just big enough for two to sleep. Inside, there’s a small stove that heats up the space quickly. Outside, there’s a fire pit and two portable wooden seats. At the right time, during the night and under a clear sky, you can catch a stunning view of the Northern Lights. The starry sky is absolutely breathtaking.

Nice rustic hut. The way there goes partly through marshland. Sturdy shoes are therefore announced!

Lake directly at the Trollhytta. Very quaint and tranquil. You can self-cater for the night in the nearby hut. Waterproof footwear is recommended.

Tromsø offers a diverse range of accommodations, from rustic shelters like Skihytta Cabin and Trollhytta Cabin, to DNT hiker's cabins such as Trollvasbu. You can also find more unique options like glass cabins for Northern Lights viewing, traditional fishing village cabins, and even luxurious cabins with saunas and jacuzzis.
Many cabins in the Tromsø region are excellent bases for experiencing the Northern Lights. Options like Aurora Fjord Cabins, Aurora View Cabin, Aera - Glass Cabins, and Aurora Huts (Glamping in Hatteng) are specifically designed for optimal viewing. Mountainside Lodge - Breivikeidet and Malangen Resort also offer great opportunities due to their location away from light pollution.
Yes, Trollvasbu is a very cozy DNT hiker's cabin with 16 beds. To use it, you typically need a DNT hut key. It provides basic amenities like solar-powered electricity, gas for cooking, a wood-burning stove, and water from a nearby river.
Amenities vary widely. Basic shelters like Skihytta Cabin offer a stove and small kitchen but no beds. DNT cabins like Trollvasbu have beds, cooking facilities, and heating. More luxurious options may include saunas, jacuzzis, fully equipped kitchens, and private bathrooms. Some, like Stortuva Shelter, provide a clean shelter and toilet, suitable for tent camping nearby.
The Tromsø region is ideal for outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including routes to huts like Skihytta Cabin which involves a steady uphill climb. Other activities include fishing, skiing, kayaking, and berry picking. During winter, many locations are perfect for Northern Lights observation, while summer offers opportunities under the midnight sun.
While specific 'family-friendly' categories aren't always listed for individual huts, many cabins offer a comfortable base for families. Tromsø Lodge and Camping is conveniently located near popular hiking trails and offers facilities like a football field and barbecue. Senja Arctic Lodge As also offers children's activities. The general outdoor environment, with opportunities for easy hikes and nature observation, is suitable for families.
For Trollhytta Cabin, be aware that the approach can involve marshland, so waterproof footwear is highly recommended. It's a rustic and tranquil setting by a lake, suitable for self-catering.
The best time depends on your interests. For Northern Lights viewing, the winter months (December to March) are ideal. For hiking, kayaking, and enjoying the midnight sun, the summer months offer pleasant conditions. Some huts, like Trollvasbu, are accessible year-round, though winter conditions may affect amenities like solar power.
Molnes at Fiskeøya in Kaldfjorden on Kvaløya is perfectly situated for sea fishing and offers the possibility of seeing humpback and killer whales hunting herring nearby from October to January, providing a unique wildlife experience.
For a luxurious experience, consider options like the Luxurious Cabin With Sauna And Jacuzzi With Wonderful View In Idyllic Malangen, which offers ocean and mountain views. The Arctic Cabin - Mellomgaard on southern Kvaløya also features a sauna and BBQ hut on-site, providing a highly-rated comfortable stay.
While many huts are 'off the beaten path' and often require a car, Tromsø Lodge and Camping is conveniently located near popular hiking trails and only a short drive from downtown Tromsø and the airport. This makes it a more accessible option for those wanting to stay closer to the city.
For winter trips, many huts provide a cozy base. Trollvasbu, for example, has a wood-burning stove for heating. When planning a winter trip, be prepared for cold weather and shorter daylight hours, especially if relying on solar power. Always check access conditions as some routes may be more challenging in snow.
