Cheviot Hill is the highest point in Point Nepean National Park and offers not only beautiful, expansive coastal views, but also a rich military and maritime history. This short loop runs past World War II fortifications to a lookout with a beautiful view over Cheviot Beach, the site where Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared in 1967, and the Bass Strait stretching beyond the cliffs. Named after the SS Cheviot that wrecked offshore in 1887, it’s one of the park’s most significant natural and historic landmarks.

This is a convenient place to stop for a break at the far end of the Lilly Pilly Gully Track. If you can time it with your lunch you can eat while surrounded by lush rainforest vegetation.

The Lilly Pilly Gully Track offers a mellow stroll through one of Wilsons Promontory’s temperate rainforests. At over 100 metres in elevation the track has a unique feel compared to the more well known coastal section of the park. The walk takes you through stringybark forests and a cool, fern‑filled gully where creeks, wetlands, and moss covered tree trunks create a quiet, sheltered atmosphere. At just under six kilometres, it’s an easy way to explore the peninsula’s greener, more secluded interior.

Observatory Point Beach is a sheltered bay-side spot with calm waters and beautiful views across Port Phillip. Just a few steps from the track, the beach is a peaceful contrast to the rugged ocean coastline elsewhere in the park. Looking across the bay, you can often see boats passing through the Heads as you enjoy this stretch of shoreline.

Fort Nepean sits at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula, where Port Phillip Bay meets Bass Strait, combining picturesque coastal scenery with significant military history. As you explore the historic gun emplacements, tunnels, and fortifications, there are also expansive views across the water and one of Victoria’s most rugged coastlines. Once a key defence post protecting Melbourne, the fort played an important role in both World Wars and remains one of the main attractions in Point Nepean National Park.

The Mount Bishop Walking Track climbs steadily through eucalyptus forest and granite outcrops before reaching one of the best lookouts in the park above Tidal River and Norman Beach. The track is relatively short but includes rocky sections and a few steeper climbs near the summit, where large granite slabs open up sweeping coastal views across the Prom. Early morning and late afternoon are especially good here when the light hits the granite and coastline below.
