The Grampians Peaks Trail is a 164-kilometre long-distance route running through Gariwerd from Mount Zero to Dunkeld. At this location near Sundial, the trail climbs through rocky terrain towards The Pinnacle, with exposed sandstone, uneven steps and broad views opening over the surrounding ranges. It’s a much more rugged section than the flatter tracks around Sundial Carpark, so expect slower going as you gain height.

Lakeview Loop is a separate circuit from the main Pinnacle climb, starting from Sundial Carpark and heading out to Lakeview Lookout before looping back. The main reason to take it is the view across Lake Bellfield and the Mount William Range, with wildflowers adding plenty of colour in spring.

Since private cars are completely prohibited past the Quarantine Station or Gunners Cottage car parks, there is a Point Nepean National Park Shuttle Bus, which is a hop-on, hop-off service running every 30 to 45 minutes. It takes visitors down Defence Road and operates daily between 10:30 am and 4:00 pm, with extended hours during summer daylight savings. A ticket costs $12.00 for adults and $8.00 for kids and concessions. It is valid for the whole day, allowing you to hop on and off as many times as you like. The Fort Nepean Shuttle Bus Stop is the final stop along the route, dropping visitors at Fort Nepean before turning around and heading back.

Defence Road is not open to private vehicles, which must park at Gunners Cottage designated parking lot. Walking the road, or the dirt strip next to the road, is common but is an exposed 5 kilometre trek one-way. Walking one way and taking the shuttle back the other way is also a popular option. There are other dirt tracks in the park that can be used in conjunction with Defence Road as well, off the asphalt. Cycling is also very popular along Defence Road, with the option to bring your own bike or lease standard bikes or e-bikes directly from the Quarantine Station Bike Hire Point. Note that bikes are banned once you hit the immediate Fort Nepean precinct.

Be sure to stop and read up on the "All washed out" sign. It explains how the Tidal River Catchment Area of Wilsons Promontory National Park was shaped over time.

The Lilly Pilly Carpark is a looped parking lot, easy for big cars to turn around in, with plenty of parking available. There are toilets here, but there is no drinking water, so come prepared with water for your bushwalk around Lilly Pilly Gully Circuit Walk, Mount Bishop summit, or down to the coast.

This relatively flat and easy path takes you out to the Balconies viewpoint. It's just over 1 kilometre each way for this out and back trek, and the native bushland gives you plenty to see before arriving at your destination.
