The church was presumably founded at the end of the tenth century. As early as 1027, a chapter of canons was associated with the church. In 1047, the archdeacon of Liège consecrated the church to St. Peter, St. Paul, and St. Odulf, and the church was first mentioned in writing. In 1130-1131, the place of worship was replaced by a Romanesque church, using flint, river pebbles, and sandstone as building materials. A partially preserved and dated consecration stone depicting Christ, Peter, and Paul bears witness to this period. From 1290 onwards, the church was recorded as being in poor condition. About a century later, in 1396, the Romanesque tower disappeared to make way for the current Gothic tower (built: 1406). Significant extensions took place in the 18th century: the southern arm of the transept was built in 1773, the northern one in 1774, and in 1783 the large sacristy was built. The church's current Neo-Romanesque appearance is largely determined by the renovation in 1903 and 1904. Since 1935, the church, with the exception of the Neo-Romanesque aisles, has been a protected monument. In 2002, the protection was extended to the entire church. The church was renovated between 2014 and 2020 and restored to its full glory, with a focus on the Romanesque, Gothic, and Neo-Romanesque elements. The picturesque village of Zammelen, a part of Kortessem, lies on the edge of the Haspengouw loess plateau and in the valley of the winding Mombeek. A combination of water, clay, limestone, and sand in the soil creates a nature reserve with varied meadows, typical hayfields, mysterious marshes, and bog woods. These different landscapes exert a special attraction on rare plant and animal species. Zammelen is wet Haspengouw at its finest.

The eye-catcher of this farm is, in my opinion, the Gothic gatehouse. It has a lower section of marlstone, the upper section is brick from a more recent period. The pointed arch entrance gate has a frame of limestone blocks. In the passageway is the door to the house on the right side. The first floor of marlstone has been preserved in the street facade of the house.

Beekvallei Herkwinning is a mosaic of meadows, roughs and fen forests that winds between agricultural areas. Because locally calcareous seepage - a type of groundwater - emerges, you will find various valuable vegetation types here. For example, a marsh marigold grassland develops on the annually mown areas. Many roughs also develop into large sedge vegetations, meadowsweet roughs or reed beds.

The artwork De Twijfelgrens is not located here, but you will find the sign about the artwork. The artwork you will find here is the Doorkijkkerk (other side of the sign). If you are now wondering where to see the Twijfelgrens, you can take a look at https://www.komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/680344 and on the artists' website you will find more: https://www.z33.be/openruimte/twijfelgrens/ - but here there is only a sign.

Very pleasant path, slightly hilly and reserved for cyclists and pedestrians, which crosses the beautiful landscapes and apple fields of Haspengouw.
