Sint-Odulfus Church

Highlight β€’ Religious Site

Since the early 1000s, Saint Odulphus has been associated with this church and its chapter as a patron saint. This is evidenced by several preserved seals of the Loon chapter. However, Odulphus is not a saint of this region, but rather of Brabant or Utrecht or Stavoren. How did he end up in Borgloon?
It was the count's House of Loon that brought the veneration of Odulphus from Utrecht when it settled in Borgloon. The Loon counts were related to the Carolingian family Balderik from Utrecht.
The veneration of the Balderiks for Saint Odulphus was continued by the count's House of Loon. The Romanesque church of 1131 was dedicated to Saint Odulphus (together with Saints Peter and Paul, S. Salvator, Holy Cross and Holy Mary). After fires at the church, new relics were brought from Utrecht (1180, 1274, again 1421) to Borgloon at the request of the Saint Odulphus chapter.
On June 12, the feast day of Saint Odulphus was and is celebrated. In Borgloon, a separate Saint Odulphus procession took place on that Sunday until the 1960s.

When you are in the church, you can admire the beautiful hilly landscape through the 'walls'. In the distance you can see the church of Borgloon. Many photographers also take a photo where you can see the church of Borgloon through the see-through church. You have this view from a certain spot in the meadow.

In Borgloon, Fred Eerdekens (Β°1951, Belgium) shows a pleated line in the landscape. Along the Roman cobblestone you will find a wood-like sculpture in which you can read the word 'doubt border' - only when you look from the right position. Fred Eerdekens often uses language as a medium for his artworks. At the same time, his work is a reflection on how language works. For Doubtful Border, you have to take the right position to be able to read the β€œhidden” word and gain insight.

A beautiful walk that we made early in the morning so that we were not bothered by the mountain bikers. Path is partly about mountain bike route

A signposted walk that starts in the center of Borgloon at the open-air theater Klappoel. We followed the orange cross. Once through the pedestrian tunnel you can follow the arrows left or right. We opted for the left: in this way you will come across the See Through Church at the beginning of the walk. In this way we hoped to be ahead of the crowds and luckily that was the case. Along the way you will come across various fruit machines where you can get delicious fresh strawberries, berries, chilled apple juice, ... from 'the wall'. A nice walk in the fruit region of Borgloon. If you want to admire all the works of art in the open air in Borgloon, it is best to jump on your bike: there are two mapped out cycling routes: 28.7 km and 42.3 km.

We wanted to take a look at the blossoms and drove to Borgloon on this last day of our midweek in Limburg. We found a place for our car at the Sports Hall and we went to the Tongersestraat to join the walk. But first we went to fill up with fuel and went to a brasserie for a light lunch. Then we looked at a few interesting buildings and started on the orange walk. According to the information we had looked up, this was a nice varied walk that would take us through meadows and orchards and over Roman cobblestones to the village of Grootloon. And that was right. After a short detour through Borgloon we walked through meadows and along orchards. A nice walk through a green environment with many climbs and descents. The see-through church and the blossoms were not missing, as well as an explanation of the Roman presence in this region.

On such a beautiful sunny day as today, it was time to head for Borgloon. What a blissful walk this was! Not too many people on the road. Only at the see-through church people were lining up to take pictures. Just past this monument you will find a cozy outdoor cafe between the plantations to have a drink (see photos). Halfway through the trail there was a vending machine where you could choose delicious fresh fruit. Strawberries, raspberries, currants, blackberries. For € 2.50 a small (but well filled) tray. Larger containers are of course also available. Had a great time! Only 1 word went through my head during the walk and that was "beautiful". What a breathtaking route. Beautiful landscapes. Along the way you will regularly come across benches to relax and enjoy the peace and the song of the birds. There is also a nice elevated platform as a lookout point (see photos). In short, this route is highly recommended!

In the center of Borgloon we leave through the fruit region with the blossoms at this time of year. Beautiful views and passage past the see-through church.
