We are, of course, not at the Wieskirche here, but at Wessobrunn Monastery with the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist. The parish church was founded in the 18th century, while the monastery church was destroyed in the 19th century after secularization. A memorial stele in the monastery garden towards the Mariengrotte still commemorates it.

You can tell that the satellite dishes are a bit old (the Raisting earth station has existed since 1963, so for more than 60 years); nevertheless, the facility is still in operation (except for the dish in the radome) and is worth a look. Guided tours are also offered at certain times; however, we only ever visited when there were no tours.

The St. John's Chapel was once a pilgrimage church and, according to legend, was founded by Duke Tassilo in the 8th century. However, it was first documented in 1428, on the occasion of the consecration of the new building. Remains of this chapel are still visible in the masonry of the choir. On the altar is the miraculous image of John the Baptist, with his parents, Elizabeth and Zacharias, at his sides. The altar was built over the spring that rises here. Since its inception, the chapel has been nicknamed "Auf Heiligenstätten" (On Holy Places), and this is still the case today.

The pilgrimage church of the Scourged Savior on the Wies is considered one of the most famous and at the same time most beautiful Rococo churches in all of Germany. Built between 1745 and 1754 by Dominikus Zimmermann, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Every year, the Wieskirche attracts around a million visitors from all over the world. It is known for its elaborate stucco decorations and ceiling paintings, among other things. In the summer, concerts are also regularly held in the Wieskirche.
