The path through the pine forest is initially quite wide, but later the trail and views become considerably more exciting. Unfortunately, due to rockfall, it's not possible to go all the way down to the bay (as of fall 2025), although many simply crawl under the barrier, but that's obviously out of the question for exemplary tourists.

Very beautiful. Please choose the route that suits your footwear. This is not a place that is easily accessible in flip-flops or sandals.

Beautiful view of the cove from the cliffs. The cove is nestled between the capes of Morgiou and Sugiton, and is home to a port and a small village.

Calanques National Park is rich in natural beauty. You can explore the stunning fjord-like inlets known as 'calanques,' such as Calanque d'En-Vau, famous for its high vertical cliffs, or Calanque de Sormiou, the largest calanque in Marseille. Don't miss viewpoints like the View of the Port Miou calanque or the View of Cassis and the Calanque du Port-Pin for panoramic coastal vistas. The park also features areas of white sand and pebble beaches.

Yes, many routes in Calanques are designed as loops. For example, the Calanque de Port Miou to the calanque d’en vau – loop is a popular moderate option, connecting two iconic calanques. Another challenging circular route is Calanque de Sormiou – loop in the Calanques National Park, exploring one of the largest calanques.
The best time to visit for hiking is generally spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) when temperatures are milder. Summer can be very hot with little shade, and park access may be restricted due to fire risk. Winter offers cooler temperatures but can be wet. Always check local conditions and park access rules before you go.
Given the rugged and sometimes polished limestone terrain, sturdy hiking shoes are essential. Due to the lack of shade, especially during warmer months, bring plenty of water (at least 1.5-2 liters per person per hour), sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a map. Layers are advisable for changing weather conditions.
Calanques National Park is accessible from major cities like Marseille and Cassis. Public transport options are available, making it convenient to reach various trailheads. For example, the area around Calanque de Sugiton is accessible from Luminy, which can be reached by bus from Marseille.
Absolutely. Calanques offers challenging routes with steep ascents, rugged paths, and occasional scrambling sections, akin to alpine experiences. Trails like Sugiton Needle – Sugiton Cove loop or The crests of Morgiou - round trip are rated as difficult and provide significant elevation gain and technical sections, rewarding experienced hikers with breathtaking views.
While some calanques are very popular, exploring routes further from the main access points or visiting during off-peak seasons (outside of summer and public holidays) can lead to a more serene experience. Early mornings or late afternoons also tend to be less crowded. Consider exploring areas beyond the most famous calanques for a quieter hike.
