The Laimburg is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the Mitterberg in the municipality of Pfatten in South Tyrol. It is located on the Kreith Saddle, which forms a transition from the bottom of the Etsch Valley, or rather, the Unterland, to the Überetsch Valley at the height of Lake Kaltern. Immediately south of the saddle, on a hill rises the Leuchtenburg Castle, and east of the saddle is the Laimburg Research Center, named after the castle. Dendrochronological dating and structural analyses make it likely that the complex was built in the second half of the 13th century. The first documented mention of Laimburg dates back to 1269, when Count Meinhard II of Tyrol granted the fortress Laimburg to his confidant, Heinrich Laian (Laianus), who came from a burgher family from Bolzano. In the 14th century, the castle was owned by the Rottenburgers. In 1339 and 1341, it was conquered by the troops of the Bishop of Trent and severely damaged. After the Rottenburgers regained possession, repairs and structural extensions were carried out, bringing the fortress to its present size. In 1410, during the Rottenburg Feud, the Laimburg passed to Duke Friedrich IV, who granted it to the sovereign's steward, Wilhelm von Waltenhofen, in 1424. The castle was abandoned at the end of the 15th century. The castle was also linked to a small, eponymous district court, to which Pfatten, in particular, belonged, as documented by a 1488 document stating "Pháttenn inn Laymburger gericht." This included, in addition to Pfatten (Oberviertl and Unterviertl), the farms and hamlets of Stadl, Kreit, Klughammer, Gmund, and Piglon. From 1999 to 2001, the ruins were consolidated and archaeologically researched with funds from the Province of South Tyrol, to which the complex belongs. Source: Wikipedia

Sigmundskron Castle is located south of Bolzano, above the Adige River. The castle has changed hands and names several times over the centuries. Before Sigmundskron, the castle was called Firmian. The current owner, Reinhold Messner, also calls the castle ruins that, more precisely MMM Firmian (Messner Mountain Museum). The MMM is a project with six locations in Tyrol.

Sigmundskron Castle sits enthroned on a rock at a strategically important location. It is a symbolic landmark for the South Tyroleans. On November 17, 1957, approximately 35,000 South Tyroleans from all valleys and regions gathered at Sigmundskron Castle. They protested for more rights. The castle has become a symbol of South Tyrol's autonomy. Reinhold Messner, who was born in Brixen in 1944, therefore shows a strong connection to this castle in his homeland.
