Due to the wartime destruction, only a portion of the original buildings remains. Numerous restaurants and cafés invite you to linger.

For centuries, the Old Market Square was the city's commercial center, where goods—primarily linen products—were transshipped. However, it lost this original function over time because it became too small as the city expanded and the population grew. The New Market Square was built as an alternative on what is now Niederwall, meaning that the Old Market Square served no specific purpose for a long time. During World War II, the square was completely destroyed, but unlike many other locations in Bielefeld, private initiatives managed to restore the historic buildings here. As a result, various styles of European architecture can be found today at the Old Market Square. The impressive historic facades and magnificent gables range from Gothic to Baroque. With the creation of the pedestrian zone in the 1970s, the Old Market Square also regained its importance because the four shopping streets Obernstraße, Niedernstraße, Rathausstraße, and Gehrenberg radiate from it.

The Rieselfelder Windel Nature Reserve, with an area of 102.34 hectares, is located in the western part of Bielefeld. It was designated a nature reserve (NSG) in 2014 by a landscape plan. It is the largest private nature conservation project in the greater Bielefeld area, located in the former sewage fields of the Windelsbleiche district, part of the Senne district. It is funded by the Rieselfelder Windel Foundation, a non-profit, dependent nature conservation foundation under the fiduciary management of the Ravensberg Nature Foundation, based in Bünde. The nature reserve includes the Ortmann farmstead and another building, which are not part of the nature reserve. The Gütersloh/Bielefeld Biological Station was established in a barn building at the Ortmann farmstead in 1997. An information center is located in an adjacent building. The southern part of the nature reserve is separated by the Landstraße 788 (state road). Part of the Autobahn 33 borders it to the west. The Schwarzes Venn Nature Reserve borders the area to the west, separated only by a road. The Windel sewage fields are characterized by their diverse biotopes: wet and dry, open and wooded habitats, and the low intensity of land use are responsible for a wide variety of species living there, from bearded reed tits and kingfishers to spadefoot toads and lesser gargoyles to barn owls and little grebes. Two unpaved circular trails, the information center centrally located in the fields, guided tours, activity days, and nature education events for children and young people offer visitors opportunities to experience the sewage fields. The Windel Sewage Field Foundation also collaborates with the Osthusschule Museum.

A stream that flows in two directions? That's what you get in Bielefeld! The Ems-Lutter and Weser-Lutter rivers originate at the Lutter spring in the Bielefeld district of Brackwede. The Lutter Valley is a very natural green belt here. Originally, the Lutter springs flowed southwest toward the Ems. Due to complaints from mill owners, tanners, brewers, and other tradespeople about the lack of water in Bielefeld, part of the springs were artificially diverted northeast in 1452, so that they flowed through Bielefeld's city center. Today, water management refers to the Ems-Lutter and the Weser-Lutter. The Lutter became increasingly polluted by domestic and factory wastewater, so that around 1910, the Lutter was piped in the city center. Thanks to the association pro Lutter e.V., sections of the Lutter in the city center have been exposed again since 2004, offering beautiful places to meet friends, relax and enjoy the cool water in the Park of Human Rights and on Ravensberger Straße.
