Gravel bike trails in Las Nieves traverse two distinct regions: the Sierra de las Nieves in Andalusia, Spain, and the area around Pico de las Nieves in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. Both locations feature rugged, mountainous terrain shaped by geological processes. The Sierra de las Nieves is characterized by karstic formations, unique pinsapo forests, and peridotite hillsides. Gran Canaria offers a dramatic volcanic landscape with significant elevation changes, pine forests, and deep ravines.

We were here on a weekday and reserved our parking spot in advance at the nature park's information desk, as the online reservation didn't work. Time slot from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. English and German are spoken there. Very friendly staff. And it's especially worth mentioning that the parking is free! At the top of the parking lot, there's also a rancher who will gladly assist you with any questions. Top organized!!! No matter which viewpoint you want to hike to from here... each one is worth it. The trails are top and also easy to walk. Breathtaking viewpoints that will remain in your memory...... STICKS AND STURDY FOOTWEAR ARE RECOMMENDED

A deep sinkhole opens up here: It's a volcanic vent approximately 70 meters deep, which can be circumnavigated on secured paths. A few steps allow you to descend into the hole, but trying to see the bottom is doomed to failure.

Expect significant climbs and descents, often through pine forests and dramatic ravines.

For instance, the Hoyo de la Sima – Tajogaite Volcano Viewpoint loop from Santa Cruz de La Palma covers over 70 km with more than 2000 meters of elevation gain. Similarly, the Tajogaite Volcano Viewpoint – Hoyo de la Sima loop from Los Llanos de Aridane is over 60 km with nearly 1500 meters of ascent. Las Nieves offers stunning natural beauty. You can explore areas like the Cubo de la Galga Gorge, ride through the lush Barranco de La Galga Laurel Forest Trail, and reach high points like Pico de la Nieve (Snow Peak) for panoramic views. The region is known for its volcanic landscapes, deep ravines, and indigenous Canary pine forests.

The Canary Islands generally enjoy a mild climate year-round. However, for gravel biking in mountainous areas like Las Nieves, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) often provide the most comfortable temperatures and stable weather conditions, avoiding the peak heat of summer and potential winter storms at higher altitudes.
Given the challenging nature of the featured routes, with significant distances and elevation gains, most are not ideal for young children or beginners. However, families with older, experienced teenage riders who are comfortable with demanding terrain might find them rewarding. For easier, family-friendly options, it's best to look for shorter, flatter sections or dedicated cycling paths outside the main mountainous routes.
While many natural areas in the Canary Islands are dog-friendly, specific regulations can vary within national parks and protected natural monuments. It's advisable to check local signage or the official park websites for the Sierra de las Nieves or relevant natural parks in La Palma regarding pet policies, especially concerning leashing requirements and restricted areas, to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone.
Las Nieves is rich in dramatic vistas. The Pico de la Nieve (Snow Peak) itself offers magnificent views. Additionally, the Las Barandas Viewpoint is another excellent spot to take in the breathtaking volcanic landscapes and deep ravines. Many points along the higher sections of the routes will provide expansive panoramas.
Due to the significant elevation changes, weather conditions can vary. It's recommended to wear layers that can be easily added or removed. A windproof and waterproof jacket is advisable, especially for higher altitudes or unexpected showers. Padded cycling shorts, gloves, and sturdy cycling shoes are essential for comfort and safety on the varied terrain. Don't forget sun protection, including sunglasses and sunscreen, as the sun can be intense.
