Blessington Lakes is officially known as Poulaphouca Reservoir, and it's only one lake. Construction of the dam began in 1937 and by the time it was completed, and the valley flooded, it became the largest man-made lake in Ireland. It supplies water to Dublin and the water is used to power a hydroelectric power plant. The lakeside trails are popular with walkers and cyclists and the lake is home to many water birds, including breeding pairs of the rare goosander.

The Dying Cow is a handy refreshment, accommodation or pick up point on the Wicklow Way. With hearty fayre, a good selection of beers and accommodation including glamping, it's a great stop-off. The bar's unusual name dates back to the 1920s, when a group of people were caught drinking here on a Sunday night. At the time, alcohol laws in Ireland and the UK allowed only “bona fide travellers” - those who had travelled a long distance - to be served outside standard hours. To get around this law, some local drinkers claimed they were "travelling with purpose" - in this case to help the landlady with a dying cow - and the name stuck.

Here the Wicklow Way long-distance trail skirts the mountain of Stookeen. Standing 420 metres (1,378 feet) high, the summit affords great views of the surrounding area. The official route runs around the southern edge, but it's a rewarding excursion to the top and back.

The Mucklagh Hut is one of three purpose-built shelters on the Wicklow Way long-distance trail. It's a little off the main route but worth the detour, especially in bad weather. The hut provides basic but comfortable shelter for a break or overnight.

One of the three shelters on the Wicklow Way: square, practical, and good. With a fire pit and bench. A good shelter from the rain and a good place to spend the night.
