Closed during the school holidays! Yesterday, August 3rd, so closed. I really don't understand it. I understand everyone has the right to a holiday, but with good intentions, this can be planned differently.

Waiting for the Lock Near Steenbergen lies the restored Benedensas lock complex. Since 1824, the locks protected the land behind it from high water from the Volkerak. They also bridged the height difference for shipping. The lock is called Benedensas because it lies on the lower reaches of the Vliet, unlike—indeed—the Bovensas. Rugged skippers would enjoy a drink in the café until they could pass through the lock. This is how it is told in the regional novels about the little boy Merijntje Gijzen. The Merijntje Gijzen walking route, right through Benedensas, takes you back to that time.

A nice resting place on the banks of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal. Enjoy our passing economy and pleasure craft. Explanation: The Scheldt-Rhine Canal runs from Antwerp to the Volkerak and is part of the Scheldt-Rhine connection, the shipping route that connects Antwerp with Rotterdam and the major Dutch rivers. The canal starts in the port of Antwerp. It then runs through Zuid-Beveland, right along the border with North Brabant. On the north side of Zuid-Beveland, this 'Antwerp' part of the canal is closed off by the Kreekrak locks in the Zeeland municipality of Reimerswaal. The canal then runs between the Oesterdam and the Markiezaatskade, through the Zoommeer. The port of Bergen op Zoom is connected to the Scheldt-Rhine Canal here via a short shipping route. The canal continues its route over the former Eendracht between the island of Tholen and the mainland of North Brabant. Then it passes Sint Philipsland and ends up in the Volkerak. Ships can sail further to Rotterdam via the Volkerak locks and the Dordtse Kil.

A short rest, then into town. A pleasant shopping street.

The Old Town Hall is a Renaissance-style building located at Raadhuisstraat 2 in Willemstad. The building was constructed in 1587. Prince Maurits originally wanted a church and a town hall to be built in the young village. Due to the war situation, there was no money for this. So a kind of multifunctional town hall was designed in which church services could also be held and which was equipped with a tower with a bell.
