The convent of Santa Clara of Valencia is located at Avenida Pérez Galdós number 119 in the city of Valencia, Spain. It is a cloistered convent founded in 1911 and inhabited by nuns of the Order of the Coletine Clares. It is the work of the architect Ramón Lucini Callejo, originally from León and based in Valencia. He created it to house a new convent for the Capuchin Poor Clares of Santa Clara in Valencia. In 1913, the community of religious women moved to the new monastery, which at the time of its construction was located on the outskirts of the city, in the Tránsitos district, surrounded by orchards. The new location was intended to facilitate the contemplative life of the religious women. During the Spanish Civil War, the convent was used by the Republican side as a male prison. Later, in the early years of the Franco dictatorship, between June 1939 and April 1942, it served as a women's prison, being a branch of the Provincial Women's Prison. During this period, the building, saturated with inmates, was guarded by the nuns along with female officials from the Sección Femenina del Cuerpo de Prisiones. The convent is currently the headquarters of the "Madre de Dios" Federation of Capuchin Poor Clares of the eastern zone of Spain. There is a popular belief among brides and "falleras" (participants in the Fallas festival) that offering eggs to the convent will prevent rain on the day of their wedding or "fallero" event. In 2021, the Valencia City Council's Department of Heritage and Cultural Resources installed a monolith next to the convent in memory of the women imprisoned during the Franco regime.
