The best family-friendly hikes and walks around Triglavski narodni park

The Peričnik waterfall (Slap Peričnik) is one of the most spectacular and well-known waterfalls in Slovenia! Located in the fairytale-like Vrata Valley, near Mojstrana and Triglav National Park, this natural gem attracts many visitors annually. The Peričnik actually consists of two separate waterfalls. The lower waterfall, with its impressive height of 52 meters, is by far the most striking. A bit higher up is the upper waterfall, 16 meters high, which can be reached via a somewhat steeper climbing path. The absolute unique feature of the lower Peričnik waterfall is a narrow path that runs behind the cascading water. You can literally walk behind the enormous mass of water! The rocks form a natural amphitheater, allowing you to walk behind the curtain of water, staying dry (apart from some refreshing mist), and enjoy a spectacular view of the valley. In winter, with persistent frost, the waterfall transforms into a giant wall of icicles, which is an extremely popular backdrop for ice climbers. In spring and after heavy rainfall, the waterfall is at its most powerful due to the abundant meltwater and rainwater rushing down from the mountains. It is an incredibly accessible highlight that can be reached from the nearby parking lot with a short, easy climb, making it perfect for a quick stop or as part of a longer hike through the Vrata Valley!

The fairytale-like Triglavska Bistrica is one of Slovenia's most beautiful alpine rivers and the beating heart of the impressive Vrata Valley! This ice-cold mountain stream originates high in the Julian Alps, at the foot of the iconic north face of Mount Triglav, and winds its way through an idyllic landscape full of dense green forests and rugged rocks. The water of the Triglavska Bistrica is known for its breathtaking milky blue and turquoise color. The river owes this special hue to the fine mineral dust, also known as 'glacier milk', which is formed when glacier water and meltwater erode the limestone rocks high in the mountains. Along a large part of the river runs the famous Triglavska Bistrica Trail, a beautiful hiking path that leads you almost everywhere along the soothingly babbling and sometimes wildly flowing water. Along the way, you will pass the well-known Peričnik Waterfall and regularly cross the river via charming wooden bridges that offer a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains. Because the water comes directly from Slovenia's highest peaks, the river remains ice-cold even on the warmest summer days. It is therefore the ultimate place to cool off during a strenuous hike by dipping your hands into the refreshing stream and enjoying the pure mountain air.

The enchanting Lake Bohinj is Slovenia's largest natural lake and an absolute dream destination in the heart of the iconic Triglav National Park. While the nearby Lake Bled is often lively and touristy, Bohinj retains a wonderfully calm, pure, and untouched atmosphere where the rugged mountain nature fully plays the leading role. According to a well-known Slovenian legend, God, when distributing the Earth, forgot a small group of extremely modest people. Because they continued to wait patiently, He gifted them the most precious gem He had secretly kept for Himself: the Bohinj valley. The name of the lake therefore directly derives from the word 'Boh', meaning 'God'. The lake, with its length of over four kilometers and a depth of up to 45 meters, is a gigantic body of water. It contains so much crystal-clear mountain water that if the lake were to be emptied all at once, the water level in the surrounding area would immediately rise noticeably. On the east side of the lake, near the picturesque village of Ribčev Laz, you will find the famous stone bridge and the historic Church of St. John the Baptist. This is one of the most photographed spots in the entire country and houses centuries-old frescoes that give the scenery an almost fairytale-like appearance. The crystal-clear water is mainly fed by ice-cold mountain rivers and underground springs. From the shore, you can see fish swimming meters deep, although a dip in the summer requires some perseverance as the mountain water always remains refreshingly cold. Whether you choose a relaxing walk along the shore, a round trip by canoe on the mirror-smooth water, or take the cable car to the top of the Vogel mountain for a breathtaking view from above: Lake Bohinj is guaranteed to enchant you from the very first moment!

This is a great private peninsula with a very nice view of the mountains. The spot is more remote from the main path and servers as an unofficial FKK area.

The upper waterfall has a smaller drop than the lower one, but it is no less spectacular. Very few people go all the way up here.
