At Pentecost, the number of visitors was OK. Sure, we weren't alone here, but it was still absolutely within the limits. We started in Corniglia via Vernazza to Monterosso. The path is quite challenging with its elevation, I wouldn't want to hike it in the heat of summer, especially since prices are now going up from June to September to curb the crowds of tourists. If possible, try to avoid the off-season, you can only win 😉. I have the link for the new rules here: https://www.travelnews.ch/here-and-there/26314-cinque-terre-neue-regeln-gegen-massentourismus.html

Mini beach in Vernazza, right by the port, so it also serves as a mooring for boats. Unfortunately it is very crowded and often dirty, there are better places for swimming

Each of the five villages offers a unique experience. Vernazza is often considered the most picturesque, known for its natural harbor and colorful buildings. Riomaggiore, the easternmost village, has a romantic atmosphere with vibrant houses and a small harbor. Monterosso al Mare is unique for its expansive sandy beach, while Corniglia offers a tranquil experience perched high above the sea. Manarola is famous for its dramatic cliffside houses and stunning sunsets.
For breathtaking vistas, consider visiting View of Vernazza and the sea, which offers a prime position for photography of Vernazza's colorful houses. Another excellent spot is the View of Vernazza from the Vernazza–Corniglia Trail, especially at the beginning of the path. Climbing to Castello Doria in Vernazza or Riomaggiore Castle also provides stunning panoramic views of the coastline and villages.
Yes, a comprehensive network of trails connects the five villages, offering exceptional opportunities to experience the diverse landscapes. The 'Sentiero Azzurro' (Blue Trail) is the most popular coastal path, though sections like the Via dell'Amore are occasionally closed. For a more challenging option, the higher 'Sentiero Crinale' (Ridgetop Trail) provides stunning views. You can find various hiking routes and guides, including cycling and MTB trails, around the area on komoot, such as those listed in the Cycling around Area Naturale Marina Protetta delle Cinque Terre guide.

Don't miss the ancient terraced vineyards and dry stone walls, which are a defining feature of the cultural landscape and a testament to centuries of human endeavor.
Beyond the charming villages themselves, each settlement boasts historical churches, such as the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Monterosso and Riomaggiore, and the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia in Vernazza. The ancient terraced vineyards, supported by thousands of kilometers of dry stone walls, are a significant cultural landmark, reflecting the area's rich agricultural heritage and its UNESCO World Heritage status. You can observe these Dry Stone Walls Along the Trail while hiking.

Highlights like Vernazza and Riomaggiore are categorized as family-friendly.
The best time to visit is typically during the spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October). During these periods, the weather is pleasant for hiking and exploring, and the crowds are generally more manageable than in the peak summer months. The unique charm of the colorful villages, the opportunity to hike along coastal trails, and the romantic atmosphere, particularly in places like Riomaggiore, are also highly appreciated. The area's blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage makes it a truly memorable destination.
While the coastal 'Sentiero Azzurro' can be very popular, especially during peak season, you can find less crowded experiences by exploring the higher 'Sentiero Crinale' (Ridgetop Trail) which offers more challenging hikes and different perspectives. Additionally, visiting the villages of Corniglia or exploring some of the inland trails that connect to sanctuaries above the villages can provide a more tranquil experience away from the main tourist paths.
