It was the first church, designed by Coenraat Norenburch, in the Northern Netherlands that was built specifically for Protestant services. Construction began in 1597 and was completed in 1607. Prince Maurits provided financial support for the church, on the condition that it would be built in a round or octagonal shape. The church is currently used by the Reformed Church/PKN and is a national monument.

In 1620, the - until then simple - building was embellished with a Flemish facade, designed by Frans Leenwijnsse. A few dormer windows were added to the new roof and the attic was used as a storage place for tools of war, such as halberds and the like.
