Whether you want to take a ferry or not, your arrival in Vinstad inevitably means passing through the pier. Close to the water, you can admire a spectacular view of the fjord, unobstructed by anything. The ferry from Vinstad takes you back to Reine, but can also take you to other branches of the fjord to explore other trails.

Indeed a very nice fjord on the way to/from the beach. Met a friendly local on the way back to the pier and we had a nice informative chat. Be prepared for a picnic if the café is closed.

One of the main high points on the classic Dronningruta (Queen's Route), Kjölen boasts tremendous views. From here, heading south, is a beautiful run along the ridge to neighbouring Sørkulen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many family-friendly hiking trails are there in the Scandinavian Mountains?

The Scandinavian Mountains offer a vast network of trails, with over 1200 hiking routes suitable for families. More than 570 of these are classified as easy, making them perfect for all ages and skill levels.

What is the best time of year for family hiking in the Scandinavian Mountains?

The best time for family hiking is generally during the summer months (June to August) when the weather is mild, and trails are clear of snow. Autumn (September to October) also offers stunning fall foliage, though some higher elevation trails might become more challenging with early snow.

Are there any easy circular routes suitable for families?

Yes, many trails are designed as circular routes, perfect for families. For example, the Bunes Beach Trail offers a beautiful, easy loop with stunning coastal views. These types of routes are great for ensuring you end up back where you started without needing to arrange transport.

What kind of terrain can we expect on family-friendly hikes?

Family-friendly hikes in the Scandinavian Mountains vary from gentle strolls through lush valleys and along crystal-clear lakes to well-maintained paths in national parks. You'll find diverse landscapes, from pristine wilderness to coastal areas, often with relatively low elevation gains on the easier routes.

Are there any scenic viewpoints accessible on easy family trails?

Absolutely! Many trails offer rewarding views without requiring strenuous climbs. The Hoven Trail, for instance, provides fantastic panoramic vistas after a relatively easy ascent. You can also find viewpoints overlooking fjords and lakes on many routes.

What natural features can we explore along the trails?

The Scandinavian Mountains are rich in natural beauty. You can discover dramatic fjords, glacial lakes, and diverse flora. Highlights like Kvalvika Beach offer stunning coastal scenery, while Abiskojåkka Canyon provides an impressive geological experience. Many trails also lead to serene forests and open mountain plateaus.

Are there any specific attractions or landmarks to look out for?

Beyond the natural landscapes, you can find unique landmarks. For instance, the Kirkeporten Rock Arch is a fascinating natural monument. Many trails also pass by charming fishing villages or offer views of iconic structures like the North Cape Globe.

Is it possible to access family hiking trails using public transport?

While some trailheads are accessible by public transport, especially near larger towns or national park entrances, many require a car. It's always best to check local bus or ferry schedules for specific routes, as public transport options can be limited in more remote areas.

What do other hikers enjoy most about family-friendly trails in the Scandinavian Mountains?

The komoot community highly rates the family-friendly trails in the Scandinavian Mountains, with an average score of 4.56 stars. Reviewers often praise the breathtaking scenery, the well-maintained paths, and the sense of adventure suitable for all ages. The opportunity to experience unique natural features like fjords and glaciers is also frequently highlighted.

Are there any trails suitable for families with toddlers or very young children?

Yes, there are many easy, relatively flat trails perfect for families with toddlers or those using strollers. Look for routes with shorter distances and minimal elevation gain, often found around lakes or coastal areas. These trails allow young children to enjoy the outdoors at their own pace.

Can we find cafes or places to eat along the hiking trails?

While many trails are in natural, undeveloped areas, some popular routes, especially those near villages or national park visitor centers, may have cafes or small eateries. It's always advisable to pack snacks and drinks, especially for longer hikes, as facilities can be sparse in the more remote parts of the Scandinavian Mountains.

Are there any less crowded family trails in the Scandinavian Mountains?

To find less crowded trails, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (late spring or early autumn) or exploring routes slightly off the most popular tourist paths. Many of the easy trails offer serene experiences, allowing families to enjoy nature's tranquility away from the busiest spots.
