2025 and still easily doable by road bike (if not too wet)!

Strabrechtse Heide has many gravel paths and especially in the weekends with nice weather these paths are used a lot by cyclists. Mostly nice weather cyclists who like to take it easy. So if you want to do some gravel riding, you should not be there on a nice weekend. During the week it is quieter with cyclists and then you can easily do some gravel riding on the many gravel paths there. If you want to come by car, no problem, there are more than enough parking spaces around this area. But, don't forget to enjoy

North Brabant offers a vast network of routes, with over 900 gravel bike trails available on komoot that prioritize low-traffic or traffic-free sections. This includes a mix of easy, moderate, and difficult routes to suit various skill levels.
You'll encounter a diverse range of landscapes. Expect expansive heathlands, dense forests, and polder landscapes. Unique sand drift areas like the Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park and the Bedafse Bergen offer rugged, dynamic terrain. While generally flat, some areas like the Brabantse Wal provide surprising elevation changes and panoramic views.
Yes, despite the generally flat nature of the region, there are routes that offer a good challenge. For instance, the Cyklist: Gravelicious route is rated difficult, covering nearly 96 km with some elevation. The Gravelroute Brabantse Wal is known for its elevation changes, and the Gravelroute Chaamse Bossen offers technical and varied terrain through extensive forests.
Many routes pass through stunning natural areas. You can explore the vast sand dunes of the Loonse en Drunense Duinen, the heathlands and fens of the Kampina Nature Reserve and Strabrechtse Heide, or the tranquil forests and lakes of the Oisterwijkse Bossen en Vennen. The Biesbosch National Park also offers unique wetland landscapes with creeks and canals.
While North Brabant is largely flat, there are some notable spots. The Brabantse Wal offers elevated views over the polder landscapes. You can also find specific viewpoints like the The mountains of North Brabant ⛰️ or the View of the Kapucijnenberg. The Roof of Brabant is also a local high point.
Yes, many of North Brabant's cycling paths are well-suited for families, especially those that follow the 'knooppunten' (nodes) system. While specific gravel routes might vary in difficulty, the generally flat terrain makes many sections accessible. Look for routes that stick to dedicated cycle paths or forest roads away from main traffic.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.37 stars. Reviewers often praise the quiet, diverse landscapes, from dense forests to unique sand dunes, and the extensive network of well-maintained, traffic-free paths that allow for immersive nature experiences.
Many of the gravel routes in North Brabant are designed as loops, making them convenient for starting and ending at the same point. For example, the Dorst Forest, Chaamse Forest & Alphen loop from Breda and the Ulvenhoutse Bos, Mastbos & Leisbos loop from Breda are popular circular options.
North Brabant has a good infrastructure for cyclists, with many routes passing near villages or through areas with amenities. You might find forest cafes or 'boshuis' like Boshuis Venkraai or The Boshut Maashorst. The 'knooppunten' system often guides you past local eateries and pubs.
Yes, North Brabant has a well-developed public transport network. Many towns and cities, which serve as starting points for gravel routes, are accessible by train or bus. You can often take your bike on trains outside of peak hours, but it's advisable to check specific operator rules and any required bike tickets beforehand.
Spring and autumn are generally ideal. Spring offers blooming landscapes and mild temperatures, while autumn provides beautiful foliage. Summer can be pleasant, but be mindful of potential heatwaves. Winter riding is possible, but trails might be wet or muddy, especially in forested areas, and daylight hours are shorter.
