The market square is the center of Staufen's very pretty old town. Geothermal drilling has punctured a deep anhydrite layer. Water penetrating the site transformed the anhydrite into gypsum, causing this rock layer to expand in volume and raising the town center. This is evidenced by numerous cracks in the house walls, some of which have been covered with "plaster" bearing, among other things, inscriptions reading "Staufen must not break apart." The cobblestones force us road cyclists to slow down in the old town to a pedestrian-friendly pace.
