The picturesque Plaka district, located at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, holds an extraordinary heritage of Byzantine churches and small historical chapels dating mostly from the 10th-12th centuries. These small architectural gems made of stone and bricks blend perfectly with the cobbled alleys and white houses of the district.

The Fort of Saint Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos) stands at the outermost tip of the Mandraki harbor mole and, for centuries, formed the strategic protection of the harbor entrance of Rhodes Town. Construction history: The fortress was built between 1464 and 1467 under Grand Master Piero Raimondo Zacosta and owes its name to a small chapel that previously stood at this location. Later, the actual tower was expanded with a circular bastion. Strategic role: During the Ottoman siege in 1480, the Knights Hospitaller successfully defended the fort and prevented the enemy fleet from capturing the harbor. Lighthouse: In 1863, a lighthouse was erected on the central fortress tower, which is still active today and guides ships into the harbor.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Holy Virgin Mary (Ekklisia Evangelismou) is the main church (Cathedral) of the city of Rhodes and is located directly on Mandraki harbor at Platia Eleftherias. Architecture: The building was constructed in the 1920s during the Italian rule. The exterior follows a Gothic style and is a reconstruction of the medieval Knights Hospitaller church San Giovanni, which was destroyed in 1856 by a gunpowder explosion. Interior: In contrast to the Gothic exterior, the interior is richly decorated in the Byzantine style with colorful murals, frescoes, and magnificent chandeliers. History: Originally built as a Catholic church for the Italian occupiers, the place of worship was converted into a Greek Orthodox cathedral in 1948 after the Dodecanese was annexed to Greece.

The Mandraki Marina & Harbour is the most famous historic harbour of the city of Rhodes. According to tradition, the ancient Colossus of Rhodes stood near the harbour entrance. Emblems: At the harbour entrance, the bronze statues Elefanti and Elafina (deer and doe), the present-day symbols of the island, stand on two columns. Sights: On the pier stand three historic medieval windmills as well as Fort St. Nicholas at the harbour tip. Use: Today, the harbour serves as a mooring for excursion boats, yachts, and fishing boats.
