Church of the Annunciation, Rhodes

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church of Annunciation of Virgin in Rhodes Town, Dodecanese: The Church of the Annunciation of Virgin is the most famous church in Rhodes Town. Located north of Mandraki, the old port of the town, this church was constructed in the 1920s, during the Italian occupation of the island. The design was based on the architectural design of the Medieval Gothic Church of Saint John, adjacent to the Palace of Grand Master in Rhodes Old Town.

Originally, this church was Catholic and served the Italian Catholic community till 1948, when Rhodes and the other Dodecanese islands were reunified with mainland Greece. This year, the church was turned into a Greek Orthodox Church and in fact, it was declared the Cathedral of Rhodes. Along with the necessary decorative reformations to turn a Catholic church into an Orthodox, interesting frescoes were also painted in the interior by the renowned Greek painter, Fotis Kontoglou.

The exterior design of the church has Gothic-style doors and windows, arches and high ceilings. A tall bell tower with a clock is located at the side entrance of the church, facing the harbor. The Church of the Annunciation celebrated on March 25th with a large religious festival.

Church of the Virgin of the Burgh Ruins

Highlight • Religious Site

The ruins of this Gothic Roman Catholic church are inside the medieval town, near the Gate of the Virgin. The church dates from the 14th century and was most likely one of the first buildings erected by the knights. During the Turkish occupation of Rhodes, the Ottomans converted the church into a mosque. Not much remains today due to the bombings of World War II. Only the three apses and parts of the small chapel have survived. However, it is an important monument as there are few other Roman Catholic churches from this period left on the islands. Fun Fact: The name "Burgh" comes from the commoners (as opposed to the knights) who inhabited this part of town

Owl Fountain, Hippocrates Square

Highlight • Monument

The Ippokratou Square with its owl fountain and the many restaurants is an imposing square that you should definitely enter through the Thalassini Gate. From here, paths lead in all directions of the old town. There we ate a very good, award-winning ice cream, which is really recommendable :) (Enter through the gate mentioned, towards the fountain and then keep left)

St. Peter's Tower (Rhodes)

Highlight • Historical Site

Tower St. Peter is located on the western side of the Gate of Freedom was one of the defenses that protected the north- eastern side of the city.

The Knights, after conquering Rhodes in 1308, restored the walls with a few minor changes during the magisterium of the Grand Masters Heredia (1377-1396) and Naillac (1396-1421) the walls were almost entirely rebuilt and new amended and reinforced in the second half of the fifteenth century.

The tower dedicated to St. Peter belongs to this time: it was built by Grand Master Zacosta from 1461 to 1464 during the pontificate of Pope Pius II, whose crest can be seen on the tower. In addition to the construction of new fortifications, Grand Masters placed on the walls of bas-reliefs of the angels in the city.

So... on our first day on Rhodes and in Rhodes, we first had to inspect the city walls👍🏻 An intact city wall is worth its weight in gold during an Ottoman attack... after all, you don't want to wake up dead one morning 😱
But those worries are unfounded... the walls are still standing and will continue to hold. The …

A tour through the old town of Rhodes Town. As expected, it is very touristy. There are many narrow and beautiful streets with small shops to see. The massive stone walls, churches, mosques and city gates are very impressive. The many small and large squares are also beautiful, where trees mostly provide shade and taverns invite you to linger.
If …

Rhodes is located in the Eastern Aegean Sea and is the main island of the Greek Dodecanese archipelago. It is also the administrative center of the entire archipelago. Today we took bus no. 40 to Rhodes town (40 minutes travel time from Faliraki for €2.50 per person). The bus station is located directly at the Mandraki port, "the" starting point for exploring the city.

On the opposite side on a mole (photo 1) there are three medieval windmills (there are said to have been thirteen). There, the grain …

Today my goal was to walk around the historic old town and the Grand Master's Palace in the moat between the two walls.
The harbor entrance is guarded by a doe and a stag standing on stone pillars. They are considered a symbol of the 🏝island.
The tour between the two walls seemed never-ending, but it was interesting.
After I …
