JakobusPilger: Have you actually ever been to the region, or are you just using your pious pronouncements to gain "expert" status for this area? Keeping your account private is a good way to avoid direct criticism. Please don't like this post; I don't want expert status for an area where I haven't even been active. Instead, write to JakobusPilger directly and tell him what you think.

The information panel at the Heck Cross recounts the fate of Jakob Heck, a farmer and bachelor from Eicherscheid. On a warm August morning in 1829, he set out early for the Venn (a fen) to cut heather for the coming winter. The path led him out of the village to the edge of the Kranzvenn, where the meadows ended and the barren heathland began. There, he toiled all day in the oppressive heat. Around midday, he took a short break before continuing his work. In the afternoon, however, dark storm clouds gathered in the distance, quickly darkening the sky. Jakob Heck found no shelter in the open landscape. The approaching storm finally unleashed its fury, and a lightning strike ended his life at that very spot. To commemorate this tragic accident, the Heck Cross was later erected, which to this day serves as a silent memorial and place of remembrance in the landscape. Note: This information is based on the information panel at the Heck Cross. The original text was written by Hans Steinröx and published in 1949 in the magazine "Der Eremit am Hohen Venn". The plaque is maintained by the Eifelverein, Simmerath local group.

A little way outside of Dedenborn lies the former oil mill in the Tiefenbach Valley between Dedenborn and Kesternich. A very beautiful, dreamy place.
