On the edge of the Kranzvenn fen in the Kallbenden nature reserve, between Konzen and Simmerath, lies a mysterious place of historical significance: the so-called "Witches' Place." It is a crossroads where six old paths converge, paths that were considered eerie even in the Middle Ages. People avoided this spot after nightfall, fearing they would be surprised by nightmares—uncanny dream specters. Later, the place became associated with witches who gathered here from the surrounding villages along the old paths.

In earlier times, the inhabitants used the paths around the Witches' Place to transport crops from the fen, including peat, clay, hay, and occasionally wood.

Today it was short and sweet again through the Eifel winter landscape. From Simmerath you cross the west wall and soon reach the former Hexenplatz, where the witches Simmerath and Konzen are said to have met. 🧙‍♀️

It then goes back through the Venn landscape and over the hump line of the West Wall.
