Here you will find the war cemetery at Hühnersiepen, which commemorates the former Nazi work education camp (AEL) Hunswinkel. The camp was established in 1940 to "educate" workers critical of the regime through mistreatment, forced labor, and starvation. Over 5,000 people, including many Russian, Polish, and German forced laborers, were imprisoned here. Many of them died due to the horrific conditions. The exact number is unknown but is estimated at 512. At the Hunswinkel AEL, people were forced to build the Verse Dam under the most appalling conditions. During the final phase of Nazi crimes, from October 1944 to May 1945, prisoners from all over North Rhine-Westphalia were rounded up here and shot.
