The highest moor in the Palatinate Forest. Small, but worth a visit.

Komoot seems to have thrown together a few highlights. It's best to withdraw your photos. Mine was originally titled "View of the Jungfernsprung."

Ms. Fath is, of course, right: That's the Jungfernsprung in Dahn! Lug, and thus also the Luger Geiersteine, are 29 km away from the Jungfernsprung by car, 13 km by bike, and 11.5 km on foot, and are also located in a different municipality.

In Dahn, it's impossible to see the Luger Geiersteine! It must be called Jungfernsprung.

Südpfalz offers a wide selection of routes for gravel biking with minimal traffic. Our guide features over 120 curated trails, ranging from easy to difficult, ensuring there's something for every skill level.
The Südpfalz region, with its mild climate and Mediterranean flair, is excellent for gravel biking from spring through autumn. During these seasons, you can enjoy the 'sea of vines' along the Southern Wine Route and the lush Palatinate Forest. Even in winter, many trails remain rideable, especially in the lower elevations, though conditions can vary.
Yes, the region offers several easier routes suitable for families. While specific 'easy' routes are not highlighted as family-specific, many of the trails through the Rhine floodplains or along the Lauter Valley are flatter and less demanding, providing a pleasant experience away from traffic. Always check the route details for elevation and surface type to ensure it matches your family's abilities.
The Südpfalz offers incredibly diverse terrain. You'll find everything from wide gravel paths and forest trails in the Palatinate Forest, which is Germany's largest contiguous forest area, to more relaxed sections through vineyards along the Southern Wine Route and flat, scenic paths in the Rhine floodplains. Expect a mix of loose gravel, compacted earth, and some paved sections connecting these varied landscapes.
Many of the gravel bike trails in Südpfalz are designed as circular routes, allowing you to start and end at the same point. For example, consider the challenging View of Hambach Castle – Schwendenstein loop from Maikammer-Kirrweiler or the moderate Forsthaus Schwarzer Fuchs – Kirschfelsen Viewpoint loop from Forsthaus Annweiler. These loops are perfect for exploring the region without needing a return trip.
Südpfalz is rich in natural and historical landmarks. Along your rides, you might encounter impressive sandstone formations in the Dahner Felsenland, or historic sites like Trifels Castle. For stunning views, look for spots like the Orensfels Viewpoint or the Kalmit, the highest mountain in the Palatinate Forest. Many routes also offer panoramic vistas over the vineyards.
Yes, you'll find opportunities for refreshments. The historic Rietburg (castle ruins with mountain restaurant) offers a stop with views. The charming wine villages along the Southern Wine Route, such as St. Martin, feature numerous wine bars and cafes. In the Palatinate Forest, traditional huts like the Kalmithaus provide refreshments. It's always a good idea to check opening hours, especially outside peak season.
Public transport access varies across the region. Many towns and villages in Südpfalz are connected by regional trains and buses, which often allow bicycles outside of peak hours. For routes starting deeper in the Palatinate Forest, access might be more limited. We recommend checking local public transport schedules and bike carriage policies for your specific starting point, especially for routes like the View of the Lauter – Lauter loop from Bad Bergzabern.
Parking is generally available in the towns and villages that serve as starting points for many routes. Look for designated parking areas near trailheads or in the centers of communities like Maikammer-Kirrweiler or Edenkoben. Some forest parking lots might also be available, but these can be smaller. Always ensure you park legally and respectfully.
The Südpfalz region is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.58 stars. Reviewers often praise the incredible diversity of landscapes, from the dense Palatinate Forest to the picturesque vineyards and tranquil Rhine floodplains. The extensive network of well-maintained gravel paths and the feeling of being truly away from traffic are frequently highlighted as major draws.
Absolutely. The Palatinate Forest offers plenty of challenging routes with significant elevation gains and technical sections. For instance, the Hilsch Pond – View from Almersberg loop from Edenkoben is a difficult route with substantial climbing. These routes often feature steep ascents and rapid descents on varied surfaces, perfect for advanced gravel bikers seeking a demanding ride.
