With the acquisition of the former Benedictine Abbey in 1809, Jean-François Boch laid the foundation stone for advanced ceramic production in the region. Since 1842, the Alte Abtei has been the headquarters of the international Villeroy & Boch group. During a walk in the park of the Alte Abtei, you will find rare exotic trees as well as the oldest sacred building in the Greater Region, the Alte Turm with its octagonal floor plan. The structure, over 1000 years old, was built as a burial chapel for St. Luitwinus and has been extensively restored in recent years.

The mill was already built in 1767 as a grain and oil mill on the Seffersbach, acquired by Villeroy & Boch in 1922, and converted into a precision engineering workshop by Johann Peter Hartfuß in 1927. The machines were driven by a water turbine on the dammed Seffersbach and transmission belts. Here, Hartfuß also developed the 'Cardan' wedding ring engraving machine, which he patented in 1928 – to this day, initials can be engraved live into wedding rings here. The renovation was awarded the Saarland Monument Preservation Prize in 1997. More info: https://www.merzig.de/tourismus-kultur/sehenswuerdigkeiten/feinmechanisches-museum-fellenbergmuehle/

The castle was built in 1858 when the Swiss Wilhelm Tell von Fellenberg converted a dilapidated tanning mill into a representative residence. After his childless death, the property passed to the von Boch family (Villeroy & Boch). From 1912–1934 it served as a district administrator's residence, then as a retirement home with infirmaries – many citizens of the district were born here. Extensively renovated from 1997–2000, the museum today awards the Monika von Boch Prize for Photography every two years, named after a daughter of the von Boch family.

Covered footbridge over the Seffersbach, near Merzig Stadtmitte station. The wooden structure with a gable roof and cross-strut railing looks like a small, rustic weather protection bridge – an unusual detail for a footpath.

The bronze statue of St. Walburga was created in 1964 by the Saarland sculptor Werner Bauer. It commemorates the parish church of St. Walpurgis, which once stood here on the church square – right next to St. Peter. During construction work in 2013/2014, its foundations were rediscovered: a Romanesque central building with four apses, about 14 m in diameter. The floor plan is now traced out on the square with sandstone slabs.
