The name "Smokkelpad 1813" (German for "Smuggler's Path") refers to a historical event that took place in this area. From 1806 to 1814, France imposed a continental blockade against England. This blockade, proclaimed by Napoleon, was a trade embargo against England that was effectively circumvented by rampant smuggling. On February 14, 1813, during a large seizure of English smuggled goods at the Dengeman farm, located here, a violent confrontation occurred between French customs officials and about 100 armed farmers and citizens. Two French customs officials stationed in Ochtrup had initially followed a larger group of smugglers across the Dutch border, which led to the seizure and a resulting shootout. A Dutchman was shot dead in the process. The "Smokkelpad 1813" commemorates this event. The continental blockade ultimately failed and subsequently favored the development of a European continental textile industry, also in this German-Dutch border region. Many industrial monuments in the Losser-Enschede-Gronau area bear witness to this today.
