The war memorial on Eltenberg hill in Hoch-Elten commemorates the victims of both World Wars. The steps and the original monument were erected in 1933. The surrounding walls were constructed from remnants of bunkers from the First World War. The monument, which was severely damaged in the Second World War, was replaced in 1967 by a new one designed by the artist Wilhelm Hanebal. No names are inscribed on the monument. In Nieder-Elten, war graves and individual memorials to civilian victims and soldiers have been preserved in a disused cemetery. A clear distinction between civilian victims and fallen or deceased soldiers is not possible based on the inscriptions on the gravestones. A police officer listed as "fallen" in 1947 was also buried there. (http://www.denkmalprojekt.org/2011/elten_stadt-emmerich_kreis-kleve_wk1_wk2_nrw.html)

The church's origins date back to the 10th century. It was built as a simple wooden structure at the beginning of the 10th century northeast of the then existing castle complex. In 967, the castle was converted into a free-noble women's convent. The Elten women's convent developed into an imperial foundation and thus also became a secular dominion, or rather, an independent small state with a secular bailiff. The wooden church was replaced by a three-aisled basilica. In 970, it was consecrated to St. Salvator and St. Vitus, but three years later, only the latter was listed as the patron saint. North of the church, convent buildings with a cloister were built. The chronology is based on pottery, which is discussed in detail by Janssen. Some burials northeast of the church date from as early as the 10th/11th centuries.
