It was severely damaged during World War II on March 7, 1945. From 1990 to 1997 and again from 2001 to 2005, the Johannbau was renovated and restored to its original form with its round-arched gables. The reconstructed Johannbau was opened to the public in August 2005 and has since served as the Dessau City History Museum.
