St. Peter's Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Around 1900, a new large residential area was built north of Dessau's old town, for which the St. John's Church, which had been responsible until then, was too small. The first letter from the parish council requesting that the parish of St. John's Church be divided dates back to December 1897.

The church was built in 1901/1903 in the north of Dessau based on a design by the ducal government and building councillor Gustav Teichmüller. He also designed the building plans for St. James' Church in Dessau in the neo-Romanesque style (round arch style) as a functional ensemble. A somewhat smaller church similar to St. Peter's Church was built in nearby Ziebigk, the Christ Church, also designed by Teichmüller.

The first groundbreaking took place on June 10, 1901. During construction work, around a dozen human skeletons were discovered. Based on a coin found at the same time, an Anhalt three-mark, it was assumed that the burial took place during the Wars of Liberation in 1813/14. The bodies were later reburied in the middle of St. Peter's Church.

The tower of the church received a concrete slab for its foundation, which was installed between June 18 and 27, 1901. The masonry work began on June 27, 1901. The foundation stone was then laid on September 18, 1901, in heavy rain. After construction work was suspended between December 16 and March 3, 1902 due to the winter weather, the cross was placed on the west gable on April 8, 1902. A short time later, the tower was also completed.

The completed church was handed over on June 7, 1903.

Sponsored by all major craft businesses, managed by the Chamber of Crafts and the Sparkasse, this beautiful fountain was built. In the summer from 11 to 22 o'clock he should bubble.

Dessau Peace and Freedom Bell

Highlight • Monument

This imposing bell was cast in memory of the peaceful revolution in 1989 from 4 tons of armored steel from the Dessau workers' combat troops.
Great idea! But why is it hanging so unreachably high that you have to write the inscriptions on an information board in order to be able to experience them? Peace and freedom are definitely not so shy that no one is allowed to get closer ...

Dessau Town Hall

Highlight • Viewpoint

One of Dessau's landmarks is the town hall, built in 1910, which houses the Dessau-Roßlau city administration and almost all municipal offices. The pretty building is characterized by the 73-meter-high town hall tower, which is also the highest tower in the city.

Anyone who manages to climb the 160 steps will be rewarded with a wonderful view of the city at a height of 42 meters.
