A considerable amount of work was required to restore the area to its current, near-natural floodplain landscape. "We deliberately avoided trying to create an artificial, idealized landscape. The goal was to replicate a development process as close to nature as possible," explains former head of the parks department, Dietrich Krätschell, describing the process by which the former farmland was transformed into a small paradise. This naturally includes establishing native plant communities. Therefore, the tree population consists primarily of willows, poplars, and ash trees – softwood species typical of floodplain landscapes. The presence of two young Chinese sequoias in the park is due to the landscape architect's design vision.
