The bird tower, which is about seven meters tall, offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching. A flight of stairs leads you first to a small, sheltered observation room with a bench and then to the open observation deck at the very top.

The church dates from the 15th century and was, according to tradition, consecrated on St. Peter's Day, June 29, 1492, by the Swedish Archbishop Jakob Ulfsson Örnfot. St. Peter is the patron saint of the church, his key adorns the parish's coat of arms. The church was built from large natural stone blocks – an admirable work by the parish, which was then very sparsely populated with about 1500 people. In the 18th century, the church was plastered and painted red. In 1954, the plaster layer was removed to expose the stately walls. In the churchyard, among other things, two medieval gates can be found again. They were part of a former wall for the defense of the church. The bell tower was erected in 1852. Source: Visitor Center

The church town of Gammelstad consists of 408 cottages and is the largest and best-preserved example of this type of settlement typical for Northern Scandinavia. The first written evidence of a church town dates back to the year 1600. The cottages used to serve - as they still do today - mainly as residences for churchgoers who came from very far away. Today, many confirmands also live in the cottages when they attend confirmation classes. Source: Visitor Centre

There are around 400 wooden houses in Gammelstad's church town. Most of them are painted Falun red, some are not painted. The houses are grouped around a medieval stone church from 1492, the Nederluleå Kyrka (“Lower Luleå Church”). It is actually a village. But it is still called a church town.
